Great thoughts, Vincent. A mobile web site admin mentioned that brand and community were two other factors that go into the UI decision process.

Any other factors anyone can think of that contribute to this decision?

I think you're spot on. My thoughts:
- Functionality: How many times has one heard someone say "Isn't the Storm BlackBerry's iPhone?" No, it isn't; but the term "smartphone" is no longer a sufficient description. In this, the proclaimed Year of the Smartphone I hope the industry can better differentiate their products.
- Level of simplicity. Ease of use, setup is a must.
- Customizability. A natural tweaker, I'm willing to try hundreds or thousands of utilities to make my experience ideal. Others stop at a wallpaper image of the family pet. Most aren't extreme like me, but programs like HTC's Sherpa may automate this process.
- Launch efficiency. As in simplicity I can't see anyone preferring low levels. (Are you listening BlackBerry?)
- UI aesthetics. I'm very sensitive to the "look and feel" of software. For example, I've long disparaged Palm for its PDAs' unpolished, cartoonish icons.
